Geometry.
Build, sort, move, and describe shapes using their properties.
Geometry tasks can begin with a simple action: make a shape, turn it, or replace one piece with several others. The useful discussion concerns properties that stay the same and properties that change.
Pattern blocks and tangrams support composing regions. Geoboards foreground sides, vertices, and boundaries, while geometric shapes support sorting attributes and composing pictures.
Avoid making orientation part of a shape’s name. A square remains a square when rotated onto a corner. Invite learners to give reasons based on sides and angles, and to test a description using an unfamiliar example.
Make it concrete.
Geoboards
Peg boards and bands for making polygons and exploring their sides, area, and perimeter.
Geometric Shapes
Movable flat shapes for sorting attributes, composing pictures, and explaining how parts fit together.
Pattern Blocks
Geometric pieces for building shapes, exploring symmetry, and comparing parts of a whole.

Sketch Pad
An open drawing space for turning a math idea into a picture, revising it, and explaining your thinking.
Tangrams
A seven-piece dissection puzzle for composing shapes, comparing area, and reasoning about position.
