Clocks
Moveable clock faces for connecting hand positions, elapsed time, and everyday schedules.
What
they teach.
Simple materials.
Powerful mathematical ideas.
Clock structure
Connect twelve hour positions with sixty minutes around the dial.
Time notation
Relate analog hand positions to spoken and written times.
Elapsed time
Track how the hands move over a stated duration.
How to use them.
Start with curiosity. Make room for discovery.
Compare the hands
Identify the hour and minute hands, then show an exact hour.
Move through an hour
Advance the minute hand while watching the hour hand move toward the next number.
Tell the whole time
Set a time such as 3:30 and explain why the hour hand sits between three and four.
Try an activity
A journey of forty minutes
Set 2:45. Move forward fifteen minutes to 3:00, then twenty-five more minutes. Record the start, the two intervals, and the finishing time of 3:25.
The hour hand does not wait for the hour
At 3:30, the hour hand is halfway between three and four. It does not stay on three until the minute hand reaches twelve. A geared teaching clock makes that gradual movement visible; an independently moveable clock requires the user to position both hands carefully.
Start with meaningful events rather than long lists of unrelated times. A lesson begins at 9:10 and lasts twenty minutes: where should the hands end? Use a number line alongside the clock when a sequence crosses an hour boundary.
A standard analog face repeats every twelve hours. The hands alone do not distinguish morning from evening. Include a.m., p.m., or an everyday context when that distinction matters to a problem.

Geared hands that move together model intermediate hour positions accurately. Check dial readability, hand contrast, and whether minute labels can be covered.
